Shen Aiqin: "Tangzhuang underwear" popular clothing market at home and abroad

In the picturesque Jiangnan region, where mulberry trees line the landscape and silk has been woven for centuries, a remarkable story began in the 1970s. This is the tale of Shen Aiqin, who grew up in this rich cultural environment and eventually became the leader of Walsall Group Co., Ltd., now the largest silk enterprise in Zhejiang Province. Premier Zhu Rongji once joked with her, saying, "Your name should be Shen Aibao," a nod to her deep love and dedication to the silk industry. At 57 years old, Shen Aiqin comes from a family with roots tracing back to the Five Dynasties, when her ancestors were known as silk artisans. She grew up surrounded by the sounds of looms and the scent of silk, carrying forward the legacy of sericulture. Her journey was not just about tradition—it was about innovation. From an early age, she showed a passion for advancing the craft, blending heritage with modern techniques. Starting in 1990, Shen made bold decisions that would reshape the company. She invested 46 million yuan to import 108 water-jet looms from Japan and another 100 million yuan to bring in advanced silk printing lines from Germany, Switzerland, and Italy. She also introduced computerized knitting machines from Korea and France, transforming the company’s production capabilities. What had once been a simple weaving operation evolved into a full-scale silk garment manufacturing industry, covering dyeing, weaving, printing, and finishing. The results were impressive—enterprise output jumped from 10 million to 200 million yuan, and profits soared from 1 million to 20 million yuan within five years. Shen Aiqin always looked ahead, aiming for global markets. She embraced the philosophy that “quality is the life of the enterprise,” training employees and implementing ISO9000 and ISO14000 standards. She established a comprehensive brand management system, leading to the creation of the internationally recognized "Everything Lee" brand. In December 1999, the trademark was officially registered by the State Administration for Industry and Commerce, becoming one of the few well-known silk brands in China. In September 2000, during President Jiang Zemin's visit to the U.S., Walsall's silk products were showcased at the "Sinochem Culture and the United States" event, earning admiration. Over the years, the company's silk garments have been exported to over 30 countries, with export value reaching 200 million yuan. The "Everything Lee" brand earned recognition as a top fashion brand, winning awards such as the China Best Women’s Design Award and the China Fashion Culture Award. In May 2001, under the guidance of the State Economic and Trade Commission, Walsall produced 300 women's silk gowns for the APEC Shanghai Conference. These garments were praised as "Tangzhuang Underwear" and gained popularity both domestically and internationally. As the new century began, Shen Aiqin expanded the company’s reach beyond silk clothing. She ventured into biotechnology, real estate, and other sectors. By 2002, Walsall had developed a large shopping mall in Hangzhou, earning recognition as a leading enterprise in East China. It also launched several real estate projects under the "Southern Homestead" brand across cities like Deqing and Jiaxing, creating new growth opportunities. Today, the group has grown into a diversified conglomerate, combining silk clothing with biotechnology, real estate, and cultural industries. Through vision, innovation, and perseverance, Shen Aiqin has built more than just a business—she has created a legacy.
