How to prevent mildew and insect bite damage
Straw, a beloved craft material, is made from locally available grasses and everyday items such as baskets, fruit containers, cup sets, matting, hats, slippers, pillows, and rugs. Some artisans use colored grasses to create intricate patterns, while others apply printed or woven decorative designs. Not only are these products affordable and functional, but they also add a touch of natural beauty and warmth to any space.
However, the natural degradation of straw products mainly occurs in two ways: mold and insect damage. Proper prevention of both can significantly extend the lifespan of these handmade items.
Mold is primarily caused by microbial activity. If treated early, it can be prevented entirely. The key lies in maintaining the quality of the raw materials and controlling temperature and humidity levels. Mold development typically progresses through three stages: initial mold, active mold, and advanced decay. In the early stage, the bales begin to heat up, and the grass loses its original color, with visible mold growth and a warm sensation. As the mold advances, the grass becomes musty and starts to rot.
To prevent mold, it's essential to dry the grass thoroughly before storage. Remove any damaged parts such as roots, leaves, or weeds, and tie them neatly. Store the hay in a dry and well-ventilated area, avoiding excessive stacking that could lead to internal heat buildup. For certain types like grass mats or yellow grass, covering them with plastic sheets can help retain moisture without causing dampness. During the rainy season in southern regions, it’s important to turn the bales regularly to dry them out and remove any mildewed portions. It’s best to use stored hay within the same year rather than keeping it for too long.
Before weaving, ensure the grass is properly cleaned, moistened, or treated with paste, then dried and collected promptly. Finished products should be packaged immediately, using moisture-resistant paper or waxed material inside the boxes for added protection. Additionally, fumigation, chemical bleaching, or boiling can be used to treat the grass or finished products to prevent mold and maintain their quality over time.
