Uruguay says it has taken 600,000 tons of cotton to rescue the global cotton market

Uzbekistan, the world's third-largest cotton exporter, has announced the sale of 600,000 tons of cotton for this season, capitalizing on rising global prices. The Ministry of Foreign Economic Relations of Central Asian countries confirmed that Uzbekistan has already secured contracts to sell this year’s cotton supply. Prime Minister Shavkat Mirziyayev highlighted the country’s successful cotton harvest during an annual trade event, expressing confidence that exports will generate around $500 million in revenue. However, he also emphasized a strategic shift: the government plans to reduce raw cotton exports in favor of boosting domestic processing. “We aim to increase domestic cotton processing to 70% by 2015,” he stated, signaling a long-term move toward value addition within the country. This transition is expected to strengthen the local textile industry and reduce reliance on raw material exports. Currently, Uzbek cotton is primarily exported to China, Bangladesh, Iran, Pakistan, and Russia. This year, the country expects to produce 1.1 million tons of cotton fiber. With an average annual output of 3.5 million tons of raw cotton and 1.2 million tons of processed fiber, Uzbekistan remains one of the top six cotton producers globally. The government’s focus on industrial development reflects broader economic reforms aimed at diversifying the economy and creating more jobs within the textile sector. As global demand for cotton continues to grow, Uzbekistan is positioning itself not just as a supplier, but as a key player in the regional textile market.
