A bottle of selling price of 10,000 yuan old wine into a collection of new favorites
**Aging Wine into New Treasures**
(Reporter Li Zeling, Correspondent Yi Youzhang) Recently, the "Chuchi Cup National Wine Culture Collection Exhibition Seminar" revealed an exciting development in the world of wine collecting. A single bottle of Chinese Red Porcelain Rabbit was recently sold for 10,000 yuan, marking a growing trend in the collection of aged wines.
According to the event, this particular bottle of Chinese Red Porcelain started at 3,600 yuan and went through more than ten rounds of intense bidding before finally reaching a final sale price of 10,000 yuan. This made it the highest-priced item in the auction. The lowest bid was just 50 yuan, while the highest reached 10,000, with a transaction rate of 60%. Nearly 100 bottles of wine and related collectibles were up for auction, with participants from across China as well as international collectors from South Korea, Japan, the U.S., and Russia.
Wuhan-based collector **Yao** shared his experience, saying that in 2004 he purchased a set of 12 bottles of "Dream of Red Mansions" for 700 yuan. Today, their market value ranges between 5,000 and 6,000 yuan. Moreover, on April 9th this year, a similar set called “12 Gold Warriors†sold for an impressive 228,000 yuan at an auction in Chengdu.
Liu Zhongqiu, president of the Wine Culture Committee of the Wuhan Wine Collectors Association, explained that the range of wine-related collections is vast, including wine bottles, accessories, labels, advertisements, lighters, magnetic cards, stamps, and more. Currently, Wuhan has dozens of collectors with over 10,000 bottles in their collections, along with hundreds of top-tier and hundred-bottle collectors. This makes Wuhan a leading hub in the national wine culture collection scene.
So, which bottles are worth collecting? Liu outlined several categories. First, exquisite porcelain bottles that are not only functional but also artistic. Second, commemorative themes such as the return of Hong Kong, the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, and the 2008 Beijing Olympics. For example, in 1997, a winery released a special empty bottle to commemorate Hong Kong's return, which originally cost just 100 yuan. Today, a single bottle can be valued at around 600 yuan.
Another highly appreciated category is complete sets of bottles. Sets like the 12 bottles of "Jinling" (from "Dream of Red Mansions"), "Romance of the Three Kingdoms," or "Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea" are especially valuable. Jingdezhen Qing vases with 3–6 pieces are also sought after. The "Eight Immortails" wine from Huangshi Distillery is particularly rare, and many Tibetan collectors have only 5–6 bottles in their collections.
Liu also reminded collectors that the preservation of the wine inside the bottle is crucial. "If the liquid evaporates, the value drops by at least one-fifth. If the wine is completely gone, the bottle becomes worthless." He advised collectors to choose Maotai-flavored liquors, which are more stable and less likely to evaporate. Additionally, the alcohol content should be above 50 degrees to ensure higher collectible value.
