(Reporter Li Zeling, Correspondent Yi Youzhang) Recently, the reporter learned from the "Chuchi Cup National Wine Culture Collection Exhibition Seminar" that a bottle of Chinese Red Porcelain Rabbit was sold for 10,000 yuan. Aging wine has become a popular choice among modern collectors.
It is reported that this particular bottle of Chinese Red Porcelain wine, which initially started at 3,600 yuan, went through more than 10 rounds of intense bidding and finally reached a price of 10,000 yuan, becoming the highest-priced item in the auction. The lowest bid was 50 yuan, while the highest reached 10,000 yuan, with a transaction rate of 60%. Nearly 100 bottles of wine and related collectibles were up for sale, attracting participants from across China as well as from South Korea, Japan, the United States, Russia, and other countries.
Wuhan-based collector Yao revealed that in 2004, he purchased a set of "Dream of the Red Chamber" wine, consisting of 12 bottles, for 700 yuan. Today, the market value of the set ranges between 5,000 to 6,000 yuan. Additionally, on April 9th this year, a similar set called "12 Golden Warriors" from the same theme fetched an impressive 228,000 yuan at an auction in Chengdu.
Liu Zhongqiu, president of the Wine Culture Committee at the Wuhan Wine Collectors Association, explained that wine culture collections cover a wide range of items, including wine bottles, accessories, labels, advertisements, lighters, magnetic cards, stamps, and more. Currently, Wuhan is home to dozens of collectors with over ten thousand bottles in their collections, as well as more than a hundred "top bottle" and "hundred-bottle" collectors. This scale places Wuhan at the forefront of the national wine collection industry.
So, which bottles are worth collecting? Liu Zhongqiu pointed out that the first category includes beautifully crafted porcelain bottles, which can serve as valuable art pieces. The second category involves commemorative themes, such as the return of Hong Kong, the 60th anniversary of the founding of New China, and the 2008 Beijing Olympics. For instance, in 1997, a winery produced a special empty bottle to commemorate Hong Kong's return, with an original factory price of just 100 yuan. Today, a single bottle is valued at around 600 yuan.
Moreover, complete sets of bottles tend to appreciate the fastest and are the most desirable for collectors. Examples include the 12-bottle sets of "Jinling" or "Dream of the Red Chamber," "Romance of the Three Kingdoms," and "The Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea," as well as Jingdezhen Qing vases with 3 to 6 pieces. The Eight Immortals wine produced by a local distillery in Hubei is particularly hard to find, with many Tibetan collectors only owning 5 to 6 bottles.
Liu also reminded collectors that wine bottles typically hold higher value when they still contain liquid. Proper preservation is essential. "If the wine evaporates, the value can drop by at least one-fifth. If it’s completely gone, the bottle becomes nearly worthless." He advised collectors to focus on Maotai-flavored wines, which are purer and less likely to evaporate. Additionally, he emphasized that the alcohol content should be above 50 degrees for the bottle to be truly valuable.
