an expanded size range for our liesl + co. patterns

Over the years, many of you have reached out to express interest in a broader range of sizes for our women's patterns. At first, only a small group of you were asking for this, primarily during my fit workshops. However, as time went on, the demand for more inclusive sizing grew significantly. If you've been keeping up with the sewing community on blogs and social media, you've likely noticed a stronger push for more diverse sizing options from independent pattern makers like ourselves. I’ve paid close attention to these conversations and taken them to heart. We definitely heard your requests loud and clear and wanted to provide more sizing choices. It took longer than expected for various reasons, but we’re finally ready to launch our expanded size range! ![Patterns in sizes 16-30](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/183a7111732820f49fb7954da03a4bbb.jpg) Expanding our size offerings wasn’t easy. It required extensive research and learning, as I had never worked specifically with this size range before—outside of fitting participants in workshops. Until now, I’ve handled all the patternmaking for our designs myself, but I didn’t feel confident doing so with a second base size and entirely New measurements. Accuracy was crucial from the beginning. Once I found someone who could assist, we began by creating samples, conducting numerous fittings, making adjustments, and repeating the process. It was a slow, labor-intensive, and costly endeavor. There were moments when it felt impossible to get it right. (For the record, the fall collection will be delayed this year!) Still, I learned a lot throughout the process, and I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved. Given that this is new territory for us and we’re unsure how the market will respond, we’re starting with two of our latest patterns. These expanded size patterns are currently available in PDF format. However, if they perform well, we’d be open to offering paper versions. Future patterns in this expanded size range and potential paper releases will depend on how these initial offerings are received. If sales indicate there’s a demand, we’ll continue to develop and release more. So, if you fall within this size range, please consider purchasing to support more options. And if you don’t fall into this range, help spread the word about these patterns! Before I introduce the new patterns and share all the photos next Monday, let’s discuss the sizing details. Our standard Liesl + Co. size range includes sizes 0-20. The new expanded size range includes sizes 16-30, meaning there’s some overlap between the two. Both ranges include sizes 16, 18, and 20 to accommodate those who might need multiple sizes. (We listened to you on this—it was important to you.) Since we created a new base pattern for the expanded size range, we tailored the fit specifically for this group. For instance, comparing the two sets of pattern pieces, you’ll notice differences in the original and expanded size range’s size 18. The primary distinction lies in how we adjusted the shoulders and neckline to be slightly narrower in the expanded sizes. When patterns are graded, the shoulders and neckline typically increase proportionally with the chest, waist, and hips. This means individuals with narrower shoulders may find the shoulder width too broad by the time it reaches their bust measurement. We addressed this common issue in our new size range. Additionally, we widened the waist and hips in the expanded sizes to better fit those with more pear- or apple-shaped bodies. (Why don’t we have better terminology for body types? I don’t think of myself as a pear!) Lastly, we provided more room through the bust with a larger bust dart in the expanded sizes, addressing another frequent frustration. Even though the bust measurement for both size 18s is the same, the proportions differ, offering more room through the bust and a narrower shoulder and neckline. Does that make sense so far? Can you grasp why developing this new size range was far more complex than simply scaling up our existing patterns? There was a lot of math involved, countless fittings, and plenty of trial and error until we felt confident in the final product. Here’s a measurement chart so you can compare the two size ranges. I know you’re curious. | Initial Size Range | 16 | 18 | 20 | |--------------------|------|------|------| | Bust, A/B Cup | 42” | 44” | 46” | | Bust, C Cup | 43” | 45” | 47” | | Bust, D Cup | 44” | 46” | 48” | | Waist | 34.5” | 36.5” | 38.5” | | Hips | 44.5” | 46.5” | 48.5” | | Expanded Size Range | 16 | 18 | 20 | 22 | 24 | 26 | 28 | 30 | |---------------------|------|------|------|------|------|------|------|------| | Bust, A/B Cup | 42” | 44” | 46” | 48” | 50” | 52” | 54” | 56” | | Bust, C Cup | 44” | 46” | 48” | 50” | 52” | 54” | 56” | 58” | | Bust, D Cup | 46” | 48” | 50” | 52” | 54” | 56” | 58” | 60” | | Waist | 37” | 39” | 41” | 43” | 45” | 47” | 49” | 51” | | Hips | 45.5” | 47.5” | 49.5” | 51.5” | 53.5” | 55.5” | 57.5” | 59.5” | And here’s a visual comparison of two front bodice patterns to give you a clearer sense of the differences. ![Front Bodice Patterns](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/5fa70522d7e626ef3780963f438ad12c.jpg) To sum it up, I genuinely hope you’ll enjoy these patterns. We’ve put a lot of effort into them, and we truly hope you’ll be satisfied with the results. To be honest, I’m quite nervous about releasing them. (Isn’t it always nerve-wracking to unveil something you’ve worked so hard on?) I’d love to create more patterns like these, now that I understand the process and challenges better. Your feedback will play a significant role in determining whether we expand further into this size range. Alright, with that said, I’ll be back on Monday and Tuesday to showcase what we’ve prepared for you! Have a fantastic weekend ahead.
