breezy blouse: playing with stripes>
Today, I’m thrilled to introduce Lisa, a valued member of the Advisors Circle, who is back with yet another fantastic sewing project for us. If you’ve followed her previous tutorials, you’ll recall her incredible work on the Romantic Neighborhood Sweatshirt, Weekend Getaway Blouse with Hemstitching, Chai Tee Dress and Tunic, Heirloom Afternoon Tea Blouse, and the Neighborhood Sweatshirt with a Shirt Tail Hem. Today, she’s here with something entirely new to share. Without further ado, let’s dive into what Lisa has been working on!

As soon as I laid eyes on the Breezy Blouse pattern, I knew it would become a staple in my daughter’s wardrobe. It’s a sleeveless top that works beautifully under a blazer or sweater during those chilly, air-conditioned office days but transitions effortlessly to a breezy, summery look when stepping outside into the 90-degree heat. The style lines of the pattern inspired me to experiment with stripes right away. I selected a rayon viscose crinkle fabric that offers plenty of drape and decided to cut the side panels on the cross grain, making the grainline arrows perpendicular to the selvedge edge.

To accommodate my daughter’s preferences, I also widened the bias strips for the neckline and armholes to 1 ½ inches instead of the recommended 1 inch. Given the nature of the rayon viscose, I anticipated it might be a bit challenging to work with. Additionally, I extended the blouse by 1 inch at the lengthen/shorten line to ensure it would fit well tucked into a pair of mid-rise jeans, and I lowered the front neckline slightly to match her taste. Remember, if you decide to lower the neckline, always cut a longer neckline binding to maintain balance.
To create the contrasting bias binding for the neckline and armholes, I began by folding the bias strips in half. Although this approach differs from the pattern instructions and adds some bulk, the lightweight nature of the rayon made the extra thickness beneficial. I pinned the right side of the strip to the wrong side of the neckline, aligning the raw edges carefully. Following the pattern’s guidance, I stitched the strips in place using a ¼-inch seam allowance, then trimmed them down. Avoid understitching—it will show on the right side! Next, I turned the strip to the right side and edgestitched it into place. To keep the rayon steady and achieve an even width, I glued-basted the binding between the pins. Trust me, my rayon needed some firm handling!

After all the hard work, my Breezy Blouse is now on its way to my daughter via mail. I can already envision myself creating more versions of this blouse in the future—there’s just something so versatile about it!
